Preserving Childhood Magic

Folksy Scouts

Folksy Scouts offers children the rare opportunity to slow down and experience the joy of learning practical life skills, while immersed in what our natural world has to offer.

Our troops work with children ages 4 to 10, and meet weekly from October through June. Each meeting focuses on completing an activity within one of our Folksy Scout Foundations. Once all activities within a Foundation are completed, the scout is considered to have “earned” the patch for that Foundation, which will be awarded to them at our end-of-year patching celebration.

Throughout the year, scouts will also be encouraged to participate in fundraising activities to earn their Entrepreneurship patch, offset the costs of patches, and Folksy Scout community events.

Our scouts are given the space to be children—exploring the natural world, learning life skills, and gaining independence in a supportive environment. Through our community, children form meaningful relationships with one another and the earth, cultivating a deep appreciation for both. At Folksy Scouts, we believe in nurturing the whole child, empowering them to grow into confident, capable individuals with a lifelong connection to nature.

Developing fine motor skills is crucial for little hands (and big hands too!) Scouts will learn essential carving skills, including knife safety (when each scout is developmentally ready), as they work on a carving project tailored to their skill level. Through these hands-on activities, children build confidence, patience, and a deep connection to their work.

We’ll explore the basics of thrifting and shopping secondhand to find items we need or desire, while learning how to upcycle and transform goods into something new and useful. Through creativity and resourcefulness, scouts will discover how to breathe new life into existing items and embrace sustainability in their everyday lives.

Developing a mindful connection to where our food comes from and how it grows is essential for our health and wellbeing. Scouts will learn about the life cycle of plants, from the planting of seeds to the harvest, cultivating a deep understanding of how to grow and sustain food. Through hands-on gardening, they’ll discover how to nurture the earth in a sustainable way while fostering an awareness of the natural cycles that sustain us.

At Folksy Scouts, we emphasize that Mother Nature is both a gift and a giver, offering us countless treasures that can nourish and inspire us. Scouts will not only learn how to care for and respect the natural world but also how to craft with it—transforming elements of nature into beautiful dyes, healing salves, and more. Through hands-on projects and reflective experiences, they’ll develop a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility for the earth, understanding that to appreciate nature is also to protect and preserve it for future generations.

In today’s world, innovation and creative thinking are more important than ever. At Folksy Scouts, we encourage children to weave together their skills—whether it’s being thrifty, resourceful, or inventive—to create opportunities for real success. Through our fundraising projects, scouts will work together to turn their ideas into meaningful contributions, learning about marketing, the value of collaboration, and community support along the way.

Learning the fundamental skills empower children to confidently navigate the natural world. This year, we’ll also be focusing on archery, knife carving skills, fire safety and first aid. We’ll have an emphasis on essential safety practices, helping scouts develop not only practical abilities but also a deep respect for the tools and techniques they learn.

Scouts will explore the art of intuitive cooking while also honing their recipe-following skills. This year, we’ll be focusing on the craft of pickling and baking, diving into a variety of delicious creations that connect us to the rich traditions of home cooking. Through these hands-on activities, scouts will learn valuable kitchen skills while enjoying the process of making food from scratch.

Scouts will learn how to take what we have and transform it into something purposeful. Through hands-on projects, they’ll create a micro-environment filled with things that not only bring joy but also help us thrive. By using resources thoughtfully, scouts will discover how to build and shape their surroundings in ways that support both their well-being and their connection to the world around them.

Celebrations naturally weave through the year, bringing a sense of rhythm, excitement, and purpose to our lives. Scouts will learn the art of hosting, exploring both etiquette and tradition as they plan and create meaningful gatherings. Through these experiences, they’ll discover how to bring people together in ways that foster connection, joy, and a shared sense of community.

At Folksy Scouts, morals and values are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that kindness comes first and that every person is deserving of love and respect. Guided by these principles, we’ll work together to complete a unique outreach project that positively impacts our community, spreading the message of compassion and connection through our actions.
